When you think of adult orthodontics, you probably picture large, metal braces or the exact opposite, a clear aligner.

While these are common in dentistry today, what is the option if you have a bit of a complex case but don’t want to use the standard metal brace? The Damon System Brace!

Created in the early 1990s, these braces have changed the world of adult orthodontics, offering more comfortable orthodontic options.

What is the Damon System?

The Damon System brace is what is called either an invisible or clear brace in dentistry; don’t get it confused with other options like Invisalign, which are technically invisible aligners.

It is fitted to your teeth with ceramic brackets and while it does have wires, they are far from visible. They do not need adjusting and tightening like a regular metal brace does, and it is renowned for being far more comfortable among patients who have used both to straighten their teeth.

Its target audience

The Damon System is targeted at patients across all age groups but, due to its discretion and power for moving teeth, it is more popular among adults.

As it is fitted, it offers a wider range of treatment options for patients who are looking to get rid of an overbite, underbite or even severe cases of misalignment. Like a regular brace, it can also rotate teeth too.

How it works

So, up to this point, it is probably just sounding like a metal brace without metal brackets.

However, if you ever knew someone in school or wore traditional braces yourself, you may remember the use of elastic bands in the process.

These were used to help create tension and pressure on the teeth, helping the brace to move them. However, with the Damon System, there is a self-ligating system, meaning that the brace has a slide mechanism built-in that can replace the elastics.

tightening braces

This is also why it doesn’t require traditional tightening and adjusting. So, your dentist puts it on, there may be some minor adjustments and you just have to sit back and watch your smile straighten. Great!

Timeframe

Like all orthodontic tools, there is no real set timeframe for treatment; it is very dependent on the severity of the misalignment being treated and is set on a case-by-case basis.

With the Damon System, you may be wearing the brace for up to 18 months but, for a more detailed breakdown of your treatment time, talk to your dentist.

Are you suitable?

There are not many criteria to make you suitable for trying the Damon System.

However, it has been known to be of more benefit to people who have had orthodontic treatment in the past that is now relapsing. Or, if you want a straighter smile in a shorter time frame than you would get with traditional braces, this may be a suitable option for you.
